North Dakota has rapidly become one of the nation’s most prolific oil producers since the introduction of modern completion techniques. We focus on specific areas within the state where we have the highest levels of expertise, allowing us to leverage our knowledge and create maximum value for mineral owners. Over the past 20 years, mineral owners have witnessed significant growth in leasing and drilling activities. This surge is driven by advances in drilling and completion technologies, coupled with substantial capital investments. One key takeaway from the past decade is that not all mineral acreage is created equal. Commodity prices can fluctuate dramatically, and the quality of operators varies. We believe it’s crucial to empower mineral owners with concise, relevant information to help them evaluate the true value of their minerals.
The Bakken Oil System is a highly productive oil and gas formation located within the Williston Basin. The Williston Basin is a large, roughly circular depression on the North American Craton, covering several hundred thousand square miles across parts of North and South Dakota, Montana, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Approximately 495 million years ago, the Williston Basin began its episodic subsidence, leading to six major depositional sequences. During the Late Devonian/Early Mississippian periods, the productive oil formations of the Bakken and Three Forks were deposited. Current well results from the Bakken and Three Forks formations continue to demonstrate positive production. The Bakken is one of the most mature unconventional plays in North America, having seen significant drilling and completion activity.
The Bakken Formation was deposited during the Upper Devonian and Lower Mississippian periods and consists of a highly organic-rich, siliciclastic rock sequence. As a self-sourced, continuous shale-oil accumulation, the Bakken is primarily dominated by its various members.
The upper and lower shale members are organic-rich, black marine mudstones with consistent lithology. These shale members serve as the source rock for oil and gas. The Middle Bakken, which varies in lithology and thickness throughout the Williston Basin, is composed of sandstones, siltstones, dolomite, and mudstones. Notably, the sandstone and dolomite facies have higher porosity than the other members, creating exceptional reservoir characteristics for oil and gas production.
The Three Forks Formation is a silty dolostone that ranges in thickness from 25 feet to 250 feet, depending on paleo-structural features, and is unconformably overlain by the Bakken Formation. Deposition occurred during the Late Devonian period, with the regressive Devonian Sea.
Throughout the cycle of sea regressions, four distinct benches were deposited, each with varying lithologies. The top two benches are similar, consisting of dolomitic limestone separated by a greenish-grey shale. The third and fourth benches are also similar, composed of mudstone with interbedded anhydrite layers.
The four benches of the Three Forks Formation provide multiple oil-rich pay zones, with minimal communication between each bench, creating opportunities for separate production intervals.

TRP Minerals is a dedicated advocate for mineral owners, working tirelessly to help them create value. We aim to empower mineral owners with the information they need to make informed decisions and seize the best opportunities to realize the full value of their minerals. Unlike many mineral acquisition companies, who provide offer prices without supporting material or explanation, our goal is to show you exactly how the oil and gas industry evaluates mineral interests.

North Dakota has quickly become one of the nations most prolific oil producers since modern completion techniques have occurred. We concentrate on specific areas in North Dakota that we have the highest levels of expertise in so that we can maximize our knowledge to best create value for minerals owners. Within the last 20 years, mineral owners have seen a tremendous growth in leasing and drilling activities. This newfound activity is a direct result of efficient drilling and completion technologies in conjunction with incredible capital budgets. One thing that has become clear in the past 10 years is that not all mineral acreage is the same, commodity prices can swing dramatically, and certain operators are better than others. We believe that empowering mineral owners with concise and relevant information to help evaluate the value of their minerals is of the upmost importance.
